What motivates the leaders of the United Kingdom Independence Party?

Farage seems to brand UKIP as irrelevant

The impossibility of electoral success for UKIP at Westminster elections has long been noted by this blog, one prime cause being the leading role played in the party by Nigel Farage MEP.

It is nevertheless surprising to see that same MEP openly and readily admitting the fringe nature of the party as reported today in the Guardian.

The whole tenure of Farage's long waited remarks on the Tory EPP potential split seem startling to say the least and may be read from this link. This particular quote provides an example:

"Our role has been to link arms with other campaigning groups simply to oppose the constitution."
