UKIP beat Tories In Hartlepool but Labour holds on.

The Daily Telegraph has a report linked here. The Scotsman puts UKIP's good performance down to a high profile visit by Mr Kilroy-Silk, here :-

UKIP, which took 20 per cent of the vote in Hartlepool in June’s European Parliament election, has been buoyed by a high-profile visit from Robert Kilroy-Silk, the TV presenter and MEP. Being leap-frogged by the Liberal Democrats will be bad enough for the Tories, but being pushed into fourth place would cast an ominous shadow over Mr Howard just as he prepares for his first party conference as leader, starting in Bournemouth on Monday.

The humiliation for Michael Howard gets headline coverage worldwide - here from Canada and in Ireland, here, attracting the headline: 'Humiliation for Tories...'

The implications for UKIP's conference starting tomorrow, could not now be any more clear - Kilroy needs to be in charge!

For the Conservatives, who also have their annual conference starting next week, they might best discuss how best to disband as they are clearly merely an obstacle to change as carefully argued by Peter Hitchens in this week's Spectator linked here.
