UKIP apologises for false results

The Daily Telegraph (read here) report on the collapsing UKIP leadership cabal has them (for the first time I can recall on record) actually apologising and admitting wrongdoing - and what wrongdoing it is - blatantly and by a huge margin manipulating their supposed poll figures and lying to the national press regarding the results. I quote:

Party officials apologised for issuing "provisional" figures overstating Mr Knapman's support.

Newspapers were told that 75 per cent of 220 constituency chairmen consulted backed Mr Knapman. The correct figures gave him just under 50 per cent (109 branch chairmen), compared with 25 chairmen backing Mr Kilroy-Silk, 28 undecided and the rest not available.

Can it be forgotten that Roger Knapman went on record to the BBC claiming a huge victory on the basis of these now apparently 'provisional' figures?

Also from the same report the paper reports Knapman as stating that Mr Kilroy-Silk is making himself a martyr and that moves will be made to oust him from the group of Euro MEPs. This evoked the following response:-

Mr Kilroy-Silk, a former Labour MP who has urged UKIP to "kill" the Tories, condemned the disciplinary threats as petulant "children's playground stuff".

In another example of the chaotic and non-constitutional way in which the party is run by Nigel Farage MEP from behind the scenes - it appeared last night that no party disciplinary panel was presently properly constituted due to an oversight in not electing a new panel at the recent conference. This lapse possibly resulting from the Party Secretary having reportedly resigned at least once in the immediate run-up to the conference.

As the crisis within UKIP deepened, it appeared that the present Chairman, Petrina Holdsworth and at least one other member of the NEC are unavailable this week, apparently on holiday!

The Guardian this morning gives its own version of recent events and a potted history of UKIP. Their article is linked from here.
