Suggested letter to be sent to Petrina Holdsworth.

The following is a suggested email/letter that could be sent to the Party Chairman. We suggest a copy be sent to any known supporter of Kilroy, such as Gerrard Batten or Tony Bennett (his research assistant at ajsbennett (at) btinternet.com

Letter to Party Chairman

There is intense press and public interest in the question of who should lead UKIP. This speculation is destabilising the Party in the run-up to the general election, so decisive action needs to be taken to put the matter to rest once and for all.

Roger Knapman’s repeated statements that he intends to serve out his four-year term have done nothing to quell speculation, which is actually intensifying. It will of course be remembered that when Roger reluctantly took on the leadership in 2002, there was no election because two other candidates were persuaded by Roger’s supporters to stand down in his favour.

The leadership is clearly aware of the problem of lack of democratic legitimacy and the potential for public concern, and has recently announced on the Party website that a nationwide survey of the Party membership has been undertaken. Unfortunately, no details of the size of the survey, the questions asked, or the results obtained have been given so it is difficult to assess its relevance.

The conclusion must be that the only way to clear the air is for Roger to submit himself to a full vote of the membership in a leadership election, in accordance with the Party’s Constitution. This will give the democratic legitimacy to the Party Leader that is currently lacking.

The last time the full membership was able to vote for a leader was in April 2000. Since then the Party’s circumstances have been transformed. This is in itself a tribute to Roger’s leadership since 2002, which no doubt the membership will take into account when casting their votes. It is now time that the two thirds of the current membership who have never voted for the Leader should be given that opportunity.

Once this matter has been laid to rest, the Party can forge ahead confident in the knowledge that it has a leadership with a mandate from the full membership to take it into the general election campaign. It is trusted that Roger will act swiftly to facilitate the leadership election.
