What motivates the leaders of the United Kingdom Independence Party?

How times change!

The following are excerpts from a leaflet that I came across while researching UKIP's greyer past. It is dated January 2000 and seemed something that should be brought to the attention of a wider readership:-

Many people were surprised when the UK Independence Party polled 10% of the vote here in the South East in the European Parliament elections on June 10th 1999. It meant I was off to Brussels and Strasbourg, with a mandate to report back on the activities of this somewhat anonymous institution.

I had been warned that others had trodden this path, with good intentions of fighting the system - only to find that they had very quickly 'gone native'. The reason soon became obvious: money is no object in the EU and MEPs are made to feel very important. There are chauffeur diriven cars, endless champagne receptions and an expenses system capable of corrupting almost anyone. The UKIP pledged that any excess travel allowances would be used to help the victims of the EU in this country. That is precisely what the three of us are doing, much to the annoyance of other MEPs

The flyer ends The sooner I am made redundant the better! and is signed by Nigel Farage, UK Independence Party MEP for South East England (January 2000)
