Lessons from Kipling!

There is so much in Kipling's verse that to pick just two examples to lament where England has gone so far wrong and illustrate where UKIP's leadership seems to be going astray is tough indeed.

Risking failure I have quoted a verse or two from two poems, both of which may be read in full for maximum impact by clicking on the titles:

The Stranger

The Stranger within my gate,
He may be true or kind,
But he does not talk my talk--
I cannot feel his mind.
I see the face and the eyes and the mouth,
But not the soul behind.

The men of my own stock,
Bitter bad they may be,
But, at least, they hear the things I hear,
And see the things I see;
And whatever I think of them and their likes
They think of the likes of me.

Big Steamers

"Oh, where are you going to, all you Big Steamers,
With England's own coal, up and down the salt seas?"
"We are going to fetch you your bread and your butter,
Your beef, pork, and mutton, eggs, apples, and cheese."

"And where will you fetch it from, all you Big Steamers,
And where shall I write you when you are away?
"We fetch it from Melbourne, Quebec, and Vancouver--
Address us at Hobart, Hong-Kong, and Bombay."

I have put my own poor attempt at verse on my blog Ironies Too this morning!
